• Distribution
In the past century the tiger was to be found from eastern Turkey and the Caspian Sea across Central Asia to the sea of Okhostk and the south through the Indian sub-continent to Southeast-Asia, Sumatra, Java and Bali.
The Siberian Tiger is the largest of the cat family. An adult weigh up to 300 kg. In Hanoi Zoo there are two Siberian Tigers. They were born in Leipzig Zoo (Germany) and they came to Hanoi Zoo in 1992. They are from an “International Exchange Tiger Program”.
• Habitat
The tiger has adapted to a wide range of habitats from tropical rainforest, evergreen forest and grassland to rocky country.
• Behaviour
Tigers are normally solitairy and they only pair up in the breeding season. Tiger usually hunt at night and during daytime they sleep and rest in the shadow. Tigers are fond of water and they can swim long distances The tiger usually preys on large mammals like pigs, deer, antelope, buffalo and guar but if they need to they will eat any animal they can catch. The tigers in the zoo are fed beef, pork, chicken and eggs. Each tiger eats around 5 percent of its total bodyweight daily. The tiger reaches its sexual maturity at an age of around 24 to 36 months. The gestation period is 100 to 108 days. Two or four cubs are born each litter. The average lifetime of a tiger is around 20 to 26 years.
