The Plan for the future and Projects
02.10.2009 08:45

The Hanoi Zoo has several projects running. In general the projects based on conservation and research have priority, but nowadays we are really occupied with developing "Me Tri – Trung Van Animal Park", a semi-wild park in the countryside.

Therefore we still wants to improve Thu Le park into a zoo with the level of expertise of the best of other zoos throughout the world. At the moment Hanoi Zoo is involved in several programs concerning education and conservation:

Breeding programs:

- Hanoi Zoo is widely involved in breeding programs in co-operation with the World Pheasant Association. Several endangered, endemic species of Vietnam are successfully bred in the zoo, especially the Vietnamese Pheasant and the Edward’s Pheasant. With these successful results, we are really proud to contribute to the conservation of native wildlife.

- Beside the pheasants there are also breeding programs for the other animals. The Owston’s Palm Civet, Common Palm Civet and Masked Palm Civet are successfully bred in Hanoi Zoo, this in co-operation with the Institute of Ecology and Biology Resource (IEBR).

- The Sambar and Sika Deer are successfully bred in Hanoi Zoo and since a long time there has been a breeding program for these species. Once in a time there are a few animals going to be exchanged to prevent the breeding program from inbreeding. At the moment there are around 10 Sambar and 30 Sika Deer in the zoo.

- From the beginning there was a breeding program for the Indochinese Tiger in Hanoi Zoo. After a few problems in the beginning, the female gave birth to four cubs. At the moment a few tigers are exchanged with Saigon Zoo and Singapore Zoo for a world-wide breeding program. So we are really delighted to be involved in the conservation of the Indochinese Tiger.

- The Tam Dao Newt is only found in a few places in Vietnam and has become one of the most endangered species of the World. They are being researched in several institutes, but Hanoi Zoo is still the only place where this newt has been bred successfully.

Educational program:

- To provide wildlife information and create an awareness of importance of wildlife conservation to the public, we focus on designing new cage labels which provide all the necessary information about the animals. In the near future we are trying to start up a lecture or discussion for school groups, which means that we are trying to teach the school groups about wildlife conservation.

Me Tri – Trung Van Animal Park:

- At the moment there are plans for building a new, wildlife zoo in Hanoi. This park should show the difference between the in-situ and ex-situ situation. Preparations are not completed, but hopefully in the year 2010 we can open the new zoo. This zoo is totally different than Hanoi Zoo and therefore a good comparison for the in-situ and ex-situ situation.

Research programs:

- To improve the conditions of the animal and trying to understand the animal, the zoo has set up several studies according to animal behaviour. Animals like the tigers, sika deers, civets and pheasants are being monitored for a specific period with as goal to increase the welfare of the animal. These results helps us designing the enrichments of the cage and determining the food specific to the animal.

- To prevent animals for becoming sick or even to die, the Hanoi Zoo has set up several research programs for disease control. Since the outbreak of the Birds Flu in the Asian countries it is really necessary to be careful and Hanoi Zoo haven’t had big problems so far. Many of the surveys are done by an outside institute, like the Veterinarian Institute, through sending samples.
